Job Description:
Holtec International and its subsidiary companies are designing an unfailingly safe and secure source of clean energy using nuclear fission, called the SMR-300 small modular reactor, which will be initially sited at the Palisades site in Michigan, USA. Holtec is a global turnkey supplier of equipment and systems for nuclear, solar, geothermal, and fossil power generation sectors of the energy industry.
Are you interested in working with an innovative project on a first-of-a-kind reactor design? SMR-300 is a small modular reactor based on PWR technology. The SMR-300 project provides an exciting opportunity to work alongside innovative engineers focused on developing the next generation light water reactor to be deployed around the world. This role will support the siting of the SMR-300 at the Palisades site, including oversight of subcontractors supporting Holtec’s environmental and licensing evaluations required for deployment. This role is tasked with evaluating environmental conditions, managing requirements, supporting permitting, and related engineering and licensing activities. Be prepared to learn from best-in-the-industry senior staff and contribute to a fast-paced, challenging first-of-kind development project.

Specific Areas of Responsibility:
This role will support the deployment of SMR-300 at the Palisades site by performing in the following areas of responsibility and related work.
  • Develop requirements for the environmental, regulatory, and performance criteria necessary for design of plant systems and structures at the project site. Support the defense of requirements and associated bases with regulatory and permitting agencies for the project site.
  • Develop, track, assign, and complete project action items addressing technical, commercial, and logistical areas.
  • Support preparation and maintenance of plant parameter data and other engineering data required for use in design engineering and permitting activities within Holtec and at Holtec’s subcontractors.
  • Work integrally with teams designing systems with environmental interfaces, including cooling water systems, utilities, wastewater, stormwater management, and others.
  • Analyze legal requirements to ensure clearly defined environmental requirements for efficiencies, emissions, and other effluent related requirements.
  • Work closely with staff planning construction activities to ensure environmental requirements are understood and accounted for, such as noise management, spoils management, and dewatering.
  • Review, comments, and manage subcontractor development schedules, procedures, and engineering products, including coordinating with other team resources and cross-team needs to achieve objectives.
  • Prepare internal work authorizations (scope, resource estimate and schedule).
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations to internal and external organizations.
  • Frequent engagement with world-wide subcontractors is expected.
  • Support development and knowledge exchange within a cross-functional engineering team, comprised of across traditional engineering fields.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Minimum of 5 years of applicable experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a related Engineering application.
  • Ability to plan and organize work tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and capable of producing error-free documents.
  • Strong problem-solving and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management principles, such as schedule, cost, and quality management
  • Eligible to work in accord with Department of Energy 10 CFR Part 810.
Desirable Additional Qualifications:
  • Experience with US Federal environmental law and permitting requirements, including with U.S. NRC.
  • Experience with Michigan region environmental law, permitting requirements, and building codes.
  • Demonstrated experience with balance of plant systems, including steam, water, air, electric, and waste heat systems.
  • Commercial PWR Plant experience.
  • Experience with PWR nuclear island systems.
  • Professional Engineer certification in-progress.
