The Pennsylvania Office of Attorney General, in partnership with the United States Attorney’s Office (USAO) for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, is seeking to hire a Deputy Attorney General to serve as a Special Assistant United States Attorney (SAUSA) under the Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN) federal grant.
This position is an at-will, one-year full-time position, with a possible extension, but no guarantee of employment after the grant period. The work location will be in the US Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania at 615 Chestnut Street.
Basic Function
The Project Safe Neighborhood SAUSA will be responsible for prosecuting offenders for violations of federal law, including 18 U.S.C. § 922(g)(1) (felon in possession of a firearm); 18 U.S.C. § 1951 (Hobbs Act robbery); 18 U.S.C. § 924(c) (possession/carrying and using a firearm in connection with a violent crime or a controlled substance); 21 U.S.C. § 841
(distribution/possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute), and other federal criminal statutes involving firearms violations and crimes of violence.
The SAUSA’s duties will include handling all aspects of the criminal cases, including grand jury investigation, indictment, pretrial litigation, trial or guilty plea, and sentencing. In addition, the SAUSA will be responsible for post-trial matters, including supervised release violations, appeals, and other collateral proceedings. The SAUSA’s cases will originate from the PSN target areas including areas within Philadelphia. Assignments will become more complex as the SAUSA’s training and experience progress. To be an effective federal prosecutor, the SAUSA must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and the ability to work closely with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.
